A federal judge has sent María de los Ángeles Pineda Villa, the wife of former Iguala Mayor José Luis Abarca Velázquez, to permanent jail for organized crime activities. According to the decision by the Federal Penal Court for the Third District of the State of Mexico, located in the city of Toluca, Pineda Villa was member of the organized crime group Guerreros Unidos since 2005, in charge of laundering crime proceedings through real estate transactions. She was also involved in the sale and distribution of narcotics in the state of Guerrero and other areas where Guerreros Unidos have a presence.
According to the court, between 2009 and 2014, Pineda Villa had income tied to illicit activities for close to a US$1 million dollars which presumably came from Guerreros Unidos. Both Pineda Villa and her husband were arrested in November after they allegedly ordered the disappearance and presumed death of 43 teacher college students in Iguala, Guerrero. However, they have not been charged with that crime.
