Seven candidates to the Mexico City mayorship held a debate organized by the Mexico City Electoral Institute. The debate focused on urban issues, security and justice.
The INE announced the order of presidential candidates for their debate set for Sunday at the Mining Palace in downtown Mexico City. The issues will be public security, corruption, democracy, plurality and politics and government.
PRI presidential candidate José Antonio Meade, who got the second spot on the debate, said candidates do not prepare for a debate in a few days but in a lifetime of public service.
Morena presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who will participate in spot number four, said he will not be attending a debate rehearsal on Saturday night. He said that despite attacks, he is still in first place in opinion survecys.
The Business Coordinating Council cancelled an event on the new airport to which it had convened presidential candidates saying that López Obrador “does not listen.” In response López Obrador said he is open to dialogue and discussion.
PAN-PRD presidential candidate Ricardo Anaya said he is the “only one who can beat López Obrador” ant it is really a two-man race. He obtained the third spot on the debate.
Former first lady Margarita Zavala, who will close the debate, said López Obrador is not invincible and proof of that is that she was ahead of him a year ago in surveys. Jaime Rodríguez is set to be the first to open the debate.
National Security Commissioner Renato Sales Heredia said that Presidential chief of staff guards working with the federal police are protecting PRI presidential candidate José Antonio Meade and former first lady Margarita Zavala, running for the presidency as an independent candidate.
