Mexico was stunned Sunday by the escape of notorious drug trafficker Joaquín Guzmán Loera, a.k.a. “El Chapo.” It was the second time that El Chapo, the head of the Pacific drug cartel, escapes from a top security prison in Mexico… The drug capo escaped Saturday night through a 1.5-kilometer tunnel leading out from the showers at the El Altiplano maximum-security penitentiary in Mexico State. The tunnel led to a construction lot with a half-finished building.
Speaking from the Mexican Embassy in Paris President Enrique Peña Nieto said he was dismayed by the escape of Joaquín Guzmán Loera and said it was an affront for the Mexican government.. He ordered beefing up of security at all prisons and to investigate whether officials were involved in the prison break.
Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong suspended his trip to France to return to Mexico City to head efforts to recapture Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán.
Attorney General Arely Gómez went to the El Altiplano prison in Mexico State to investigate drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s escape on Saturday night.
Authorities said 31 people were taken into custody in connection to the escape of Joaquín Guzmán Loera… Among those being interrogated are the El Altiplano chief, whose name was not revealed, aides and other prison wardens.
The government issued an international alert to ask for help from different agencies to locate and arrest Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán… The request for help includes Interpol and U.S. and European agencies.
Washington offered to help recapture escaped drug capo Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán… U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said her country will work closely with Mexico to provide any assistance that could lead to a rapid arrest.
Federal authorities launched a nine-state operation to find and arrest Joaquín Guzmán Loera… The operation covers Mexico State, the Federal District, Morelos, Puebla, Guerrero, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo and Tlaxcala… Authorities in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador also issued alerts.
In Mexico City, the head of Public Security Hiram Almeida, said his team was working with federal authorities at checkpoints on highways and in airports following the escape of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán…. Almeida said that a photograph of Guzmán Loera was distributed to all Mexico City police.
Authorities issued a red code alert in the Mexico City airport in Terminals 1 and 2 following Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán’s prison break… Army soldiers were patrolling both terminals and monitoring airport checkpoints.

The National Civil Protection Office decreed an emergency in five municipalities in Colima following the eruption of the Colima volcano… The volcano has been erupting since Thursday. The National Disaster funds will be sent to Colima, Comala, Coquimatlán, Cuauhtémoc and Villa de Álvarez…. Thick clouds of ash from the volcano forced authorities to close the Colima airport on Saturday at six in the afternoon and it reopened at seven p.m. on Sunday.
The National Weather Service said that tropical storm “Dolores” developed over the Pacific Ocean and is expected to cause heavy rains in Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima.
