Knights Templar leader La Tuta, arrested
Federal Police detained early Friday morning, Servando Gomez Martinez, alias La Tuta, the head of the Knights Templar cartel. Martinez was one of the most wanted criminals in Mexico. One news report said Martinez was detained while he slept in a working class neighborhood of Morelia. But another said he was eating a hot-dog.
Martinez was a top leader of the Templars, which officially appeared in march 2011, after a split in the Familia Michoacana. Since its birth the Templars pretended that Nazario Moreno, alias “El Chayo,” had been killed in a government operation. The fact turned out to be a ruse, after El Chayo reapeared in Michoacan last year. n
He is famous for the videos he taped with top members of Michoacan’s political class, the media and the business class. In one video he appeared with Rodrigo Vallejo Mora, son of the PRI governor of Michoacan Fausto Vallejo. The video led to an investigation and the son was sent to a high-security prison, while the father had to resign, supposedly because of health problems. The arrest of Martinez comes after several high level arrests of members of his group.
