As Apatzingan and other nearby cities in Michoacan get more violent, government officials are admitting that they are seeing the resurgence of small splinter drug trafficking groups that once worked with the Knights Templar cartel.
Apatzingan Priest Father Gregorio Lopez, Father Goyo, said at least 39 municipalities are controlled by a group calling themselves Los Viagras, who confronted Federal Police and army units on Tuesday, after they were disloged from Apatzingan’s city hall. In an interview with Aristegui News, Father Goyo said ineptitud or omission on the side of the authorities have contributed to the resurgence in violence.
According to news reports, Los Viagra are linked to organized crime groups. Some reports have said they were linked to Guerreros Unidos. In November, La Tuta, the fugitive former head of the Knights Templar said last year that Los Viagras were being protected by the government and that they had links to Guerrero’s state’s Guerreros Unidos.
